This type was never intended for circulation because of the fresh law that prohibited the portraits of living persons from appearing on United States currency (see the Five Cents Fractional Currency with Clark's likeness).  All of the Sherman/Grant notes may have been printed as wide margin Specimens, but many were trimmed and placed on Fractional Currency shields.  This may explain why Variety 2 is unknown as a Wide Margin specimen.

Some Specimen notes were printed on blank paper captured from Confederate blockade runners during the Civil War.  Prepared for the Confederate States of America for use on their currency, this paper features a distinctive "CSA" watermark.  Parts of the watermark are often visible on Specimen notes.
